Ear Piercing and Headaches!

We will go back to old ages when Chinese people used acupuncture as treatment for health problems. Thousands of  years ago, they used acupuncture in the ear by needles to treat headaches because the ear has several pressure points. In fact, there is a specific kind of piercing in the ear called “daith”.

What Is a Daith Piercing?

It is a hole done in the ear through the tough, innermost fold of cartilage placed in the entrance of our ear canal. The small curved part of cartilage is the most difficult part of the ear to pierce. It is so trendy to pierce this part. It is believed that daith piercing can help to treat headaches and migraines. Actually, it is done in the spot that relieves headaches. Therefore, it is a modern method to treat headaches just like the old Chinese acupuncture.

A Daith Piercing Relieves Headaches!

In fact, there are no scientific studies about the impact of daith piercing on easing headaches. However, many people who tried it, insisted that they felt comfortable and didn’t suffer from headache pains.

This effect might be the placebo effect. Moreover, there is a theory saying that the piercing impacts a branch of the vagus nerve which goes from the brain to your body. It is thought that the pressure of the earring on a specific spot in the ear works to prevent pain receptors in the body, yet there is no scientific evidence. Doctors don’t recommend daith piercing as a therapy for headaches and migraines because it may be risky. In a study done in 2017, the participants proved that there was improvement of migraine symptoms after getting a daith piercing.

The Downsides of Ear Piercing!

Is ear piercing safe? Does it have risks? In fact, it may be risky to get ear piercing, but daith piercing is much more risky. It may cause side effects, such as:

  • Infection.
  • Bleeding.
  • Swelling.
  • Scarring.
  • Lingering pain.
  • Worst migraine symptoms.

We can conclude that there is lack of evidence on the effectiveness of ear piercing in stopping headaches or migraines. However, some people felt that ear piercing relieved headache. This makes sense because it works as the Chinese treatment by needles to relieve headaches. Ear piercing gives you trendy look, but you have to make sure that it is done with safety measures.
